Is Your Condo or HOA Ready for Hurricane Season?

Summer means many things to many people. For kids it’s the end of the school year, for families it’s a time for vacation, but for most Floridians it is also the start of the dreaded hurricane season. June 1 marks the beginning of the season, which goes until November 30.

2014 Hurricane SeasonHere are a few tips for preparing for this year’s hurricane season:

  • Always keep an emergency kit stocked and ready. This kit should include a variety of nonperishable food items such as canned tuna, peanut butter, granola bars, cereal, and rice. It is also important to have plenty of water. Plan for at least one gallon of water, per person, per day. This kit should also include medications, flashlights, batteries and a battery operated radio.
  • Make sure to have a full tank of gas in your car.
  • Make sure to have cash. If the power goes out for a long period of time, most stores will be unable to process credit cards.
  • Invest in a generator. These are worth every penny in the case of a lengthy power outage. They come in many sizes, some running just a small device and others running full-sized appliances.
  • Make sure you have hurricane shutters and that they are ready to use.
  • Know your closest emergency shelter and evacuation routes.

Property Managers and community association board members should also prepare their communities for hurricanes with the following tips:

  • Post an evacuation route. Make sure the residents know exactly where to go and what to do in case of an emergency. Post it in the hallway, elevator, or gatehouse to make sure everyone is fully aware.
  • Distribute important phone numbers and information. Distribute a packet containing contact information for the property manager, Management Company and the local police and fire departments. Also include addresses and phone numbers of local shelters and food stores.
  • Protect your property. Get trees trimmed and greenery pruned so that they don’t create a safety hazard in strong winds. Make sure all outdoor furniture is safely stored, storm shutters are installed, if needed and that the gas main is turned off. Also check up and review insurance policies.
