Holiday Lights and Your South Florida Landscaping

Many communities and unit owners like to participate in holiday traditions by installing outdoor embellishments, including lights and other decorations. With that being said, it is important to make sure you know how to take care of your South Florida landscaping during the holiday season.

  • Make sure to discuss any electrical power sources that are outdoors with your landscaper or maintenance personnel. You wouldn’t want your holiday lights run over by the lawnmower, would you?
  • Be careful when running extension cords and other power sources on the ground or through your landscaping. Also be wary of the amount of electricity being used to power your lighting.
  • All it takes is one night of temperatures in the low 30’s to 40’s for your most loved plants and shrubs to receive damage. Make sure they are well fertilized and are receiving proper sunlight. Try to mulch with pine straw. This is an easy way to keep plants with shallow roots warmer throughout the season.
  • Keep your yard healthy with just enough water. It is important not to over-water your plants in the winter season, as the water is not absorbed as quickly by the heat, so less is more!
